The Late Show...

England 2-0 Trinidad and Tobago

Two late goals from Peter Crouch (83) and Steven Gerrard (90) fired England into the knockout stages of the 2006 World Cup.

England struggled for long periods to break down a hard working Trinidad and Tobago side, who for most of the match, played with 9 men behind the ball. They also caused a scare or two, with John Terry coming to England's rescue on more than one occasion.

But just when we thought the game would fizzle out into a goaless draw, a pinpoint cross from Beckham, found Peter Crouch on the far post to power his header home - a good old fashioned English goal if ever I have seen one!

Trinidad had nothing left in the tank, and the game was made safe on 90 minutes as Steven Gerrard scored what is, a trademark goal for him - firing into the right hand corner.

Okay, yet again, this wasn't by any means a vintage performance, but England were dominant throughout, created chances and their patience paid off in the end.

Lofty's Man of the Match - Jonn Terry

The main positives from the game are the earlier than predicted appearance of Wayne Rooney...

...the performance of Aaron Lennon as substitute, and the fact that after 2 games and 6 points - England have qualified for the second round - and we haven't even started to play anywhere near our best yet!

As for the negatives, well I will leave that to the ITV commentary and pundit team, who were on the players backs from the kick off!!

Terry's goal line clear was all that stood between England and disaster tonight. Still, Becks was my Man of the Match for assisting both goals and crossing several others that any old lady crossing the street could have fired into the back of the net. (Yes, Mr. Crouch, I'm speaking about you, all alone in front of the net with the ball right on your boot laces...)

ha ha, yes mate, he had enough chances to win the World Cup on his own... still, he got the one that mattered ;)

As for Beckham, I personally didn't think this was one of his better games and his passing was a bit scratchy... still, one moment of his undoubted brilliance was enough!!

    Come on England!!

    Hi Lofty
I wish the TV & Radio people would check out your site before spouting off there mouths. At least they would get a refreshing view of the game.

I am sick of all the radio and TV pundits. Bla bla England this and that.
They could not pick there nose let alone a football team.
England has now got in to last 16 of the cup what more do we need too do.
We can’t win it in the 1st stage so this is the best start to a world cup we have had for a long time.
Yes some players were not at there very best but apart from Spain & Mexico most other teams have been the same just scrapping through including Brazil (most peoples favourites to win). Ok it was a good goal. ;-)
What we need to do now is win our next game and then it starts proper.
We needed to rest Lampard he has been poor, & rest Ashley Cole (not long back from injury) has been consistent. Another player to rest may be David Beckham he could do with it.
This hurts to say but if he did rest DB should make JT (wash my mouth out) Captain he has been brilliant at the back and make’s RF look happy on the ball.
We could all see if MC can play the holding player if he did rest FL.
    What do you all think?

    Thanks Corp

I agree with what you are saying, Lampard has looked poor and it adds fuel to my long running point, should FL and SG be in the same side.

BOTH great players, but never the same for England... there again, SG's goal was that of his Liverpool performances. But Lampard looked lost out there and I would definitely rest him.

The call to rest Beckham may be a good one... there again, as I mentioned, it wasn't his best game yesterday... but all it took was one moment of quality... GOAL!!

I think the Sweden game is, and may be the only opportunity to do this... so over to you Sven?

Saying that, I thought two of Sven's subs were spot on last night... the one I questioned was Downing for Cole who, (wash my mouth out) was having a great match.

The most pleasing thing for me, is that we are in the last 16, and the World hasn't seen the real England yet!!

    Come on England!!

Corp & Lofty morph into Alas Smith & Jones head to head again!

Agree with all of what you say. I mean, Argentina fanny about with 23 passes, yet we can do it with just the one!

England will get better as the tournament goes on.

Finally for the T&T game I was sat next to none other than Chris 'Incredible Jeff' Kamara, I'll forward on a piccie if I have time.

    SB.

    You poor sod! ;)

    Come on England!
